Who are you & what do you do?
I'm Lewy, I play bass.
Where are you from?
Newcastle, NSW.
How did you get into the music you listen to today and what's 3 of your most influential bands?
I grew up in country NSW with very limited exposure to hardcore and heavy music. My discovery stemmed from emo & post hardcore played on alternative music programs on TV and through older family friends listening to heavier music. I remember my older brother and I writing down bands from Channel V and MTV to download once we got our first family computer. I progressed into hardcore & metalcore naturally through the internet and found myself leaning to the heavier side with an obsession for deathcore in the myspace era. I'd say in terms of my writing influence today, alot of it is based around the latter mention. Any early material from bands like Impending Doom, With Blood Comes Cleansing & Carnifex but it's hard to narrow down. Australian heavyweights like Parkway, Prom Queen and The Red Shore definitely made it seem possible for Aus heavy bands to become a reality on a global level.
What/who is the inspiration of Volatile Ways?
To me, our vocalist Emilly is the inspiration for the band. I created the project as a surprise Christmas gift for her in 2019 with some unused demo's I had written for Honest Crooks. She would get up and do guest spots at shows and alot of our friends would encourage her to front a band, it's been a pleasure to watch her grow through performing on stage and creatively in writing. Emilly prides herself on inclusivity in the scene and it's great to see it come to fruition at our shows.
How would you describe VOLATILE WAYS to someone who's never listened to hardcore before?
It sounds like the scene from The Simpson's where Laura Powers rips Bart's heart from his chest and kicks it into the trash. Aggressive, emotional, volatile. It's in the name!
